On a sun-beaten rock

in a salty green sea

a warbling shorebird

called out to the deep

The song travelled far

on the crest of the wind

and a voice echoed back

that was splendid, but dim

The bird flicked with joy

and called out again

and the songs danced together

like seafaring friends

As the melody rolled over water and ground

more voices joined in

to the gathering sounds

Waves whistled softly

Sandy banks sighed

The sun sweat with gold

in a shimmering sky

The symphony sailed across faraway lands

always rippling back

to the place it began

to that one little shorebird

who sang to the sky

while the world answered back
